Massachusetts Hoisting License Renewal Guide

Hoisting licenses in Massachusetts must be renewed every 2 years and are eligible for renewal starting 60 days before the expiration date. The Office of Public Safety and Inspections (OPSI) will send a renewal notice to both the email address and mailing address on file 60 days prior to license expiration.


What You Need to Renew Your Hoisting License in Massachusetts

To successfully renew your Massachusetts Hoisting Engineer License, you must submit the following:

  • A valid form of identification
    (Massachusetts driver's license, learner's permit, or MA state ID from the RMV)

  • Proof of DOT Medical Certificate

  • Continuing Education Certificates
    One for each license restriction (1A, 2A, etc.) being renewed

  • Photo for your license
    Either:

    • Authorization for OPSI to use your RMV photo

    • Or a 2x2 inch photo that meets license guidelines


Active-Duty Military Members

If you’re currently serving, the VALOR Act allows you to keep your hoisting license valid for up to 90 days after discharge.

  • $60 nonrefundable application fee

  • Pay online, or if mailing your application, include a check or money order made payable to:
    “Commonwealth of Massachusetts”
